MANCHESTER_CHRISTMAS_2017_STILL1 million views in 4 days!

Our Christmas animation gives the major retailers a run for their money as the heart-warming Christmas video of the year.

Produced in collaboration with Manchester City Council’s communications team the animation has reached a million views in just four days, rivalling the festive advertisements of major retail giants such as John Lewis and Marks and Spencer.

The animation sees the familiar Santa character and his Manc Rudolph sidekick, from last years campaign, trying out a bit of ice skating in the city centre. Santa, who isn’t very competent on skates is soon helped by a couple of kind-hearted children before the camera pulls out to reveal that other skaters have etched out a huge Manchester bee in the ice.

Intended to promote the Christmas season in Manchester and encourage families to visit and enjoy the city, the video has also tugged at the heart strings of viewers following what has been a turbulent year for the city.

The response has been phenomenal with hundreds of people taking to social media to show their support:

‘Beats any John Lewis/M&S ad this year I think’

‘Why did I just well up at the council’s Christmas video?’

‘Christmas marketing advert hype usually revolves around @marksandspencer and @johnlewisretail however this tops them all… #Manchester #GreatestCity’

‘Sod John Lewis and M&S! This is Christmas ad you want to see! #Christmas’

‘Where will you bee this Christmas? I’ll bee here, where the bees still buzz… Nicely done @ManCityCouncil.’

‘I don’t know about #MozTheMonster, but this got me right in the feels. Bravo @ManCityCouncil #MCRCHRISTMAS’

‘My daughter made me watch it 12 times a row. Good job, great advert.’

‘Simple but brilliant! Well done Mcr City Council ’

‘TOTALLY in love with this’

‘This is Christmas. This is Manchester. This is Perfect!’

Andrew Lord, Managing Director at Flipbook Studio, said:

“It was great working in partnership with Manchester City Council’s communications team again for another year of festive, creative brainstorming. We were asked to devise a creative treatment and animation that was humorous, heart-warming, poignant and that incorporated the worker bee emblem of Manchester, which has this year come to symbolise so much more to many Mancunians. Christmas is a time for unity and coming together and we wanted the animation to simply reflect that and Manchester’s indomitable and compassionate spirit. We’re very proud of our home city and delighted that the animation has been so well received.”

Cllr Pat Karney, Manchester’s Christmas spokesperson, said:

“Our Christmas video has broken all records and just shows how many people it has touched at an important time for the city.

“The festive season boosts the city’s economy by around £90m and is vitally important for retailers of all sizes – independent and high street alike.

“The animation touches the soul following turbulent times in the city this year, and it has really hit the mark with the millions of people who have watched and loved it.”
