We were commissioned by Microsoft Games Studio Rare to produce a variety of look-development artworks and animations for the development of their latest Xbox One title, Kinect Sports Rivals. The task involved us working closely with Rare’s art team to produce a series of concept artworks, prints and short animations that Rare’s art & development teams could use as a guide to push the look of the in-game environments, real-world physics simulations and characters. By producing these animations, simulations and images, Rare were able to see what worked and what didn’t en route to developing the final look and style of the game.
Presented are a series of concept artworks depicting action scenes from some of the sports that feature in the game. There are also a couple of look-development animations; one focusing on environment style as well as a first person view of the wake racing and the other animation focusing on early character development and how the character sits in an animated environment (this character design has since progressed and is not representative of the final game characters).
We recently got the opportunity to play the game at Gamescom 2013 and we can assure you that all the hype is very much justified. It looks gorgeous and its incredibly good fun and engaging to play. The Kinect control functionality is remarkably responsive too!
