Star Wars: Origins – R&D Breakdown

Check out the latest R&D breakdown for Flipbook Studio’s work on Star Wars: Origins.

The R&D breakdown was created using 3DS Max 2020, Tyflow, Vray, PhoenixFD and Nuke. Tyflow is a new particle system being written from the ground up by just one person.

The music was composed by Richard Bodgers.

The image is built with two ground layers: the lower level is segmented into smaller pieces and the top consists of larger pieces.

To emphasise the impact when the Star Destroyer hits the surface, the ground layers are tested against the distance of the Star Destroyer, and when it’s close, it fractures.

The top layers break up more than the lower – the fragments are also bound together in a shaped waveform for greater effect. The binding shapes are tested for their rotation and velocity threshold.

For aesthetics, we used several renders: beauty, smoke and atmosphere. The debris rendering was comped separately in Nuke – we also used Phoenix smoke sims.
