It’s not everyday you get to play around with Imperial AT-AT Walkers, Snow Speeders and King Kong. The mere mention of anything Stars Wars is normally enough to make CG artists go weak at the knees and they certainly did that when we were asked by the very talented folks over at Love Creative to recreate the battle of Hoth scene from The Empire Strikes Back, as well as the famous King Kong Empire state building scene. These animations formed part of Love’s ‘Movies From Above’ campaign to promote Virgin Atlantic’s sponsorship of the Edinburgh Film Festival, which centred on 12 famous outdoor film scenes but as they would look if watched from high above in the sky.

Love designed an online game for the campaign and we were asked to produce two cinema sting animations which were shown before Virgin Atlantic film screenings during the festival. The campaign was aimed at building brand awareness and to underline the films offered as part of Virgin Atlantic’s in-flight entertainment.

We modelled and animated the AT-ATs, snow speeders, biplanes and King Kong before adding VFX such as lasers, snow plumes and smoke. We then composited the assets into satellite imagery provided by Love. The result… a couple of fun little animations that formed part of a simple but clever campaign.
